How to count footnotes and bibliography in Google Docs

List included parts first. Measure all components in the same version, then add or subtract only components absent from or included in the starting total. The automatic scope does not decide the recipient’s rules.

Turn the assignment into an inclusion list

“Maximum 3,000 words, bibliography excluded” does not settle footnotes. Copy the rule exactly and ask about decisive omissions; meanwhile report scenarios with and without notes rather than silently choosing the favorable one. Inventory title, abstract, body, captions, quotations, bibliography and notes. Small type does not imply exclusion, and long quotations remain content when included. Define editorial scope before checking technical placement.

Distinguish function from technical position

Google documents the default exclusion of headers, footers and footnotes. A bibliography written as body paragraphs remains in the automatic count; identify and measure its range before subtracting it. Notes pasted as ordinary paragraphs may already be included. Actual footnotes, end-of-document note lists and exported plain text can represent the same content with different automatic scopes. Describe the measured copy, avoiding double addition.

Prepare a checking copy

Keep original formatting, links and cross-references. In a copy, separate included, excluded and unresolved material; organizational labels are not counted. Measure blocks separately and show an explicit sum rather than permanently deleting material for a provisional number. Alternatively record selections in the original. Check both boundaries: whether the “Bibliography” heading is excluded and whether the preceding paragraph still belongs to the conclusion. Record the first and last included items.

The 2,740-word body loses 180 bibliography words and 60 acknowledgments; adding 140 note words gives 2,640.

Reconcile a worked scenario

Suppose the body total is 2,740 words, including 180 bibliography words and 60 acknowledgments; 140 footnote words were measured separately. Excluding bibliography and acknowledgments while including notes gives 2740 - 180 - 60 + 140 = 2640. Excluding notes gives 2,500: simply leave them out. The difference is exactly 140. These are teaching figures, not an application test. Keep both scenarios until the rule is clarified, then retain the applicable rule beside the result.

Check notes when the view changes

Google’s pageless mode changes how notes appear and does not offer headers or footers. Something absent from the current view is not necessarily absent from the file; changing view does not change the assignment. For included notes, use an external checklist: note number, transferred text, count and checked status. Decide separately whether reference markers count. A note mixing a citation and commentary must follow the instruction or remain explicitly unresolved.

Use one version for every component

Do not combine Monday’s revised body with Friday’s note count without rechecking. Finish edits, update the breakdown and generate the submission file; any later change reopens the count. In group work, appoint someone to consolidate the final version without implying authorship. Section counts are estimates until merging: connecting text, added headings, repeated citations and combined bibliographies change the total.

Apply the method to characters and Italian cartelle

Every row must use the same unit: never subtract 180 words from 18,000 characters. If spaces count, include those in admitted material and separators actually added between blocks; spaces, line breaks and blank paragraphs are different strings. Use the character counter and, when defined by the recipient, the Italian cartelle calculator. State characters per cartella; page layout, font, margins and spacing cannot supply that definition.

Present a short, reproducible result

“2,640 words; body and notes included, bibliography and acknowledgments excluded; final version attached” is enough for delivery. Keep detailed arithmetic for checking; screenshots without measured text do not establish scope. Apply an imposed institutional method and disclose differences before submitting. The word counter checks copied blocks but cannot interpret regulations or distinguish acknowledgments from conclusions: identify relevant content, avoid duplicates and document exclusions without hiding requested content.

Two totals for two rules

All figures belong to one scenario. Including or excluding notes changes the total by 140 words.
