Choose the unit named by the requirement
A character limit can include spaces and punctuation even when the text contains only a few words. Use the result whose label matches the requirement. Letters are shown separately because digits, spaces and a final full stop are not letters. A title that looks short on screen can still contain more characters than a narrow field permits.
Characters are counted as visible clusters
The browser’s Unicode grapheme segmentation groups a base letter and combining accent into one visible character. A composed emoji can also be one grapheme while containing several code points. This counter normalizes equivalent accent representations to NFC. A service that counts UTF-16 units or UTF-8 bytes can therefore accept a different length from the number shown here.

Spaces and line breaks follow explicit rules
Ordinary spaces and tabs contribute to the total with spaces; a tab is treated as one space. Explicit line breaks are excluded from the character totals and remain visible in the line count. Whitespace is excluded from the result without spaces. Compare a short sample when your destination treats returns or non-breaking spaces differently.
Do not cut a Unicode sequence in the middle
If a field rejects the text, shorten complete words or visible characters and check it again in that field. A family emoji or an accented letter may be stored as several elements. Removing an arbitrary code point can change the displayed symbol. An independent counter helps explain a difference but cannot redefine a platform’s technical limit.
Check the final copied version
Count the string after adding a prefix, separators or a signature. Joining two cells with “; ” adds two characters at each join. Keep the original before cleanup and record the unit used in a report. Character totals do not measure the file size of a PDF or DOCX, which includes formatting and other data.
