Italian battute, characters and words: what to count

In Italian publishing, battute normally means characters including spaces. Words, letters and characters measure different things: numbers and punctuation are characters, but not letters. Follow the specified unit.

Four different measurements

A 2,000-word story has no fixed character length: words, dialogue, numbers and signs vary. Characters including spaces also cannot be recovered exactly from a non-space total without the original separators. Treccani records battuta as a keystroke, but editorial counts measure final text, not typing actions: pressing Delete ten times adds no ten characters. Identify the required unit before counting.

Check a literal example

The Italian sample La casa è blu. has four words (La, casa, è, blu), ten letters (2 + 4 + 1 + 3), three spaces and one period: fourteen characters including spaces, eleven excluding them. The period explains why letters and non-space characters differ. Digits, commas and parentheses also remain after removing spaces. Repeat the manually checkable sample in the character counter before diagnosing a manuscript; verify pasted text and the tool’s convention.

Including spaces

This includes word separators but does not settle line breaks, tabs or typographic spaces; see the counting method. Two consecutive spaces count more than one. Fixing doubled spaces can reduce characters without removing information. Do not remove necessary spaces or punctuation to pass a limit: measure the readable document actually delivered.

Word-count rules

Apostrophes, compounds, abbreviations, numbers and addresses can produce different counts. This site counts “l’acqua” and an internally hyphenated word as one each; a decimal number may also remain one unit. These are declared comparison conventions, not universal linguistic definitions. Use the word counter for word limits and characters including spaces for battute; substituting one can hide a substantial overrun.

Clarify incomplete requests

“About three pages” allows estimation; “maximum 5,000 characters including spaces” is precise; “three cartelle” still needs the size. Ask narrowly: do the 5,000 include title and captions? Is a cartella 1,800 or 2,000? Save the answer with the project rather than transferring it to another article or publisher. Shared requirements prevent collaborators using conflicting definitions.

Exact and estimated conversions

18,000 characters ÷ an agreed 1,800 = exactly ten cartelle, independent of word length or layout. For 1,000 words, an assumed six characters per word gives about 6,000 characters; seven gives 7,000. The 1,000 difference comes from the assumption. Count finished text directly. Printed pages also depend on layout, dialogue, headings and white space; planning estimates do not certify pagination.

Before reporting

Confirm unit, spaces and scope. Use prescribed software, otherwise record tool and convention. Check that a selection has not replaced the whole document and that no paragraph is duplicated or ending omitted. Report labels such as “8,430 characters including spaces” or “1,240 words, bibliography excluded”. Label multiple values clearly rather than leaving the recipient to choose.

Letters and digits

Prices, dates, codes, percentages and symbols can contain few letters but many characters. A code without spaces may count as one word while consuming most of a character limit. Check the complete string and choose the matching statistic.
