Clipboard representations differ
A copied selection may provide several formats. W3C Clipboard API documentation distinguishes plain text and HTML, without guaranteeing every source and destination provide identical data.
Plain pasting avoids rich presentation and may adopt destination styling while losing color, bold, size and interactivity. Uniform appearance does not prove completeness or ordinary characters: captions may be omitted and nonbreaking spaces retained. Verify fidelity separately from styling.
Style removal is not character cleanup
Accents, apostrophes, tabs and spaces are text elements. Passing through plain text does not automatically normalize them, so search differences may remain.
The four A/B examples contain space, tab, NBSP or LF and are all plain text. Three can share site character totals despite different bytes or functions. These are string experiments, not clipboard tests in a particular application. Plain text includes more than letters and ordinary spaces.
Choose the selection before pasting
Select required headings, body and other parts while excluding menus, controls, suggestions and comments unless requested. Check the selection reaches the final paragraph; pasting cannot infer intended scope.
Compare beginning, middle and end. This quickly catches partial selections without certifying every sentence. Explicitly include agreed notes, boxes and interactive content. See HTML text counts for page-versus-article scope.

Links may lose destinations
Plain text can retain a visible label while losing its active link destination. Inspect actual output. Labels may suffice for prose; required URLs must be verified or inventoried separately.
Do not reconstruct addresses from memory or automatically add them without agreement. Bibliographies and embedded article links have different needs. Distinguish label, visible destination and accessory title; test a real link before transferring all others.
Tables and lists become separators
Plain tables represent relationships with tabs or newlines. Check multicell rows for fusion, order and label associations: every word present does not guarantee correct rows.
List markers may transfer as characters, be regenerated or disappear. Check required numbering and declare purely graphical treatment. Preserve field formats for reusable tables rather than relying on spaces and visual alignment.
Pasting is not OCR
Copying a picture containing words does not make its text available. Plain output may omit it or contain a source description that differs from drawn words. Compare with required material.
Scans without usable text layers need recognition and review, not another paste mode. See OCR diagnosis. Inventory body, captions, chart labels and descriptions to avoid omissions and duplicates.
Test the result rather than a universal shortcut
Commands and keys depend on program, system and focused field. Use the available plain-text option on a short title, phrase and link. A text-only intermediary may help but still needs checking.
A lone unformatted word cannot reveal style or structure loss. Include block boundaries and meaningful separators. Destination styles do not prove source styling was imported. Inspect characters and behavior separately from appearance.
Count the verified copy
Use the counter after checking inclusions. Low totals suggest missing notes, captions or image text; high totals suggest interface content, added addresses or repeats. Character-only differences suggest separators before words.
Do not force totals to match by general cleanup. Identify and apply the appropriate change, such as extra-space reduction, line reconstruction or preserving functional characters. Record scope for a repeatable identifiable delivery.
Plain text can contain different separators
| String notation | Site characters | Words | Lines | UTF-8 bytes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A[SPACE]B | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 |
| A[TAB]B | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 |
| A[NBSP]B | 3 | 2 | 1 | 4 |
| A[LF]B | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
